Facebook has introduced Live video service through ‘Facebook Mentions’ where fans can connect with public figures.

In similar lines to Twitter’s Periscope and Meerkat, celebrities and public figures can host live stream videos and ‘take fans behind the scenes, host Q&A, share announcements, and more — all in real time.” The company has already signed up a few celebrities who have agreed to host live broadcasts, including Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Serena Williams, Luke Bryan, Ricardo Kaká, Ashley Tisdale, Lester Holt, Martha Stewart, and Michael Bublé.

The Live video will appear in News Feed for fans to comment, like and share with their friends. The videos will be stored in Facebook archives and can be viewed by fans at a later time too, unless it is removed by the celebrity. According to Facebook’s Live Products Manager Vadim Lavrusik, “Over 53% of Facebook video views constitute re-shares which happen much later than the post. We think this would be an awesome experience for both public figures and also users. We want to get feedback from both public figures and viewers as we evolve the product.”

While anyone can view the Live videos, only public figures with verified pages can host their video on their page.
