What’s Trending: Dubai Crash, Rio Olympics, London Stabbing

Whats Trending

Undoubtedly, our starting news for this week’s trending headlines comes from close to home: the crash landing incident of Emirates flight, flying out from India, at Dubai airport. The reason behind the crash is still not very clear. Emirates said that all of the 300 people on board were safely evacuated and just 14 people were taken to hospital to be treated for “cuts and bruises”. Unfortunately, one of the fire-fighters on the spot, Jasim Issa Mohammed Hassan, lost his life trying to put off the fire. Our prayers are with him and his family.

The moment the incident happened, the crash started trending on social media with airport passengers sharing short videos of the smoke laden plane, probably the only way of knowing what was happening in those few minutes before emergency arrived. The quick response and efforts by the Dubai airport and Emirates staff in evacuation also received praises.

Going from this unfortunate incident to another one: stabbings in London. A man was arrested for stabbing a 60 year old woman to death and injuring five others in Russell square, London. The motive behind the attack are still not clear, but the police suggests mental state to be a major reason behind the attacks. The moment the incident happened, it got 33.5K tweets with residents expressing mixed reactions on Twitter.

Moving onto sorts: this week will also witness the start of Rio Olympics 2016. Not only has this event, which boasts over 10,000 participants from over 200 nations, captivated the sports fan from around the globe; it has perhaps unsurprisingly kept the marketing agencies on their toes as well. Some of the noteworthy ads that we saw included UK Channel 4’s ‘We are superhumans’ for the Rio Paralymics and Samsung’s ‘The Chant’.
