National Legislative Framework For Media On NMC’s Radar

Asserting that the law is a “key pillar for the regulation of print, TV, radio and electronic publishing as well as regulating the relationship between the National Media Council (NMC) and the media free zones”, Dr Sultan bin Ahmad Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of State, and Chairman of the Board of Director of NMC, discussed a project for developing a legislative framework for regulating the media sector in the UAE.

Emirates New Agency (WAM) reported that in a meeting held on August 29, 2016, the Board of Directors of the NMC reiterated that project would be consistent with the federal law issued by President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan regarding its organization and scope of jurisdiction.

The report also indicated that law gives the NMC a new dimension to promote all regulatory aspects in a way that improves the legislative environment of the media.

As per the WAM report: “The NMC was making a holistic review of legislation regulating the sector. Work is under way on an integrated plan to issue a series of regulations and guidelines to cope with the latest media trends and to improve performance without interfering in the work and editorial policies of media establishments.”
