Directory Big Won: UAE #4 Top Creative Country; MENA Shines

Directory Big Won Network rankings that offers an annual overview of the most awarded creative work, people and businesses operating in the global marketing arena saw WPP as the most successful holding company in 2016. Omnicom took the second spot, followed by Publicis, IPG and Havas.

The Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region has done well on various counts this year as well. Among the top countries for creativity, UAE is on the number fourth spot with 1,833 points in all. USA (4603 points), UK (2652 points) and New Zealand (2003 points) claim the top three spots. Australia is on the fifth position. The other countries in the top 10 include India, Spain, Japan, Germany and Brazil.

Most Awarded Agencies
Impact BBDO Dubai has made it to the top 10, taking the tenth position, in the top agencies for creativity. The others in the list include, in order of ranking, Colenso BBDO Auckland, Y&R Auckland, Dentsu Tokyo, LOLA MullenLowe Madrid, Almap BBDO Sao Paulo, BBDO New York, Forsman + Bodenfors, Clemenger BBDO Melbourne and AMV BBDO London.

Among agency networks, BBDO scored 3,405 points overall topping the list a second time. Ogilvy took second place with 2,274 points. On the third place is Leo Burnett with 1,951 points. The rest of the top 10 networks were Y&R, McCann, JWT, DDB, TBWA, Grey and Publicis respectively.

Among the most awarded media agencies in the year globally, while Starcom MediaVest Chicago was named the top media agency for the fourth year in a row Starcom MediaVest Dubai took the second spot, followed by Mindshare MENA Dubai and OMD Dubai. MEC MENA Dubai is also in the list on the number nine position. The top five media agency networks include Starcom, OMD, Mindshare, UM and MEC.

In the top agencies broken down by specific media, Starcom Mediavest Dubai has been named No.1 agency in the world for Media.

Most Awarded Work
Work from MENA did not make it to the most awarded campaigns of 2016 across all categories. However, agencies from the region shine in specific categories. The ‘THAT affordable’ campaign of IKEA UAE by Memac Ogilvy Dubai has taken the eighth position, and Nujoom/ Maataha/ Shams for Qatar Islamic Bank, by Memac Ogilvy & Mather Doha has taken the 14th position, in the most awarded print campaigns of 2016.

In the most awarded poster/outdoor campaigns of 2016, IKEA UAE’s ‘It’s THAT affordable’ is on the number four position.

Johnnie Walker’s ‘Keep the flame alive’ campaign by Leo Burnett Beirut takes the number five position and Adidas UAE’s ‘There will be haters’ by Starcom Mediavest Dubai takes the number 13 position in the most awarded media campaigns of 2016. In the same category, 3SG BBDO Tunis’ ‘Backup Memory’ for Samsung Tunisia, Starcom Mediavest Dubai’s ‘Bollywood on Wheels’ for Emirates NBD and Impact BBDO Dubai’s ‘Goodbye Bad Luck’ for Loto Libanais shared the 20th spot.

Impact BBDO Dubai’s ‘Sweet Dreams’ for Johnson’s Baby Lotion and ‘Procrastination’ for BHV UAE took the  number 18 spot in the most awarded radio campaigns of 2016, sharing the position with DDB Dubai’s ‘Stroll/Puppy’ campaign for Henkel .

In the most awarded digital campaigns of 2016, 3SG BBDO Tunis’ Backup Memory’ took the number 12 spot and Leo Burnett Beirut’s ‘Keep the flame alive’ took the number 17 spot.

‘Backup Memory’ is the only campaign from the region awarded in the top mobile campaigns, taking the number 15 spot.

Impact BBDO Cairo took the number 10 spot for its campaign ’90 Million Smiles’ for Pepsico Egypt Lays in the top alternative and innovative campaigns.

Most Awarded People
Bechara Mouzannar, the Chief Creative Officer from Leo Burnett MENA has taken the number seven position and Paul Shearer of Memac Ogilvy & Mather MENA is on the number 14 position in the Top Chief Creative Officers.

The other leaders in the list comprise Tham Khai Meng, Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide, Nick Worthington, Colenso BBDO Auckland, Josh Moore, Y&R Auckland, Mark Tutssel, Leo Burnett Worldwide, David Lubars, BBDO Worldwide, Greg Hahn, BBDO New York, Luiz Sanches, Almap BBDO Sao Paulo, Pete Case, Ogilvy & Mather South Africa and David Droga, Droga5 New York.

Three of MENA’s best have been named in the Top Executive Creative Directors list. These include Fadi Yaish, Impact BBDO UAE (number four position), Malek Ghorayeb, Leo Burnett Beirut (number five position) and Ramzi Moutran, Memac Ogilvy UAE (number nine position).

Leo Burnett Beirut’s Lama Bawadi and Maya El Kai of Memac Ogilvy Dubai are on the number five and 20 position among the top copywriters.

Tina Sioufi of Leo Burnett Beirut is on the number eight position, and Amir Adib JWT Cairo are on number 12 position among the top planners.

MENA’s Top 10
A deep dive into the performance of MENA agencies puts Impact BBDO Dubai on top of the list, followed by Memac Ogilvy & Mather Dubai and Leo Burnett Beirut Lebanon. FP7/DXB Dubai and JWT Dubai are on the fourth and fifth position. The other agencies, in the order of ranking, are Geometry Global Dubai, TBWA RAAD Dubai, JWT Cairo Egypt, JWT Beirut Lebanon and Leo Burnett Dubai.
