What’s Trending: Frozen Talks, Broken Promises & Apple’s Slim MacBook

The week started on a negative note with the oil trade talks, which was held in Doha (Qatar) between major oil exporting countries yielding no results. The talks started off on the back foot with the non-participation of Iran from the meeting that then resulted in Saudi Arabia backing out. The failure of the talk has resulted in oil prices dropping further. Only time will tell how this will affect the global economy, though many reactions and future prospects have been posted on twitter. Not surprisingly the news made it to our trending list with #DohaTalks seen on twitter.

On a related but different matter, the Middle East and oil companies again found their place in the trending headlines with the 3-day strike in Kuwait by the oil-workers coming to and end. The strike that was held to show the discontent of the workers on cut wages. The strike seemed to have served its purpose and came to a swift conclusion, largely due to the intervention of Kuwait’s Emir, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, who guaranteed to protect the rights of the workers. The news trended on Twitter with comments being posted under #Kuwait.

Moving on from frozen-meets to broken promises, Middle Eastern countries found themselves on the wrong side of Twitter comments, when it was revealed that they had failed to honor their pledged donations to Gaza. It was reported that while the US and European countries have mostly paid out what they had initially agreed upon, a few Middle Eastern countries are still lagging behind. The news trended with #Gaza all over the Middle East.

In sports, Barcelona’s loss to Valencia at home was the most trending of the headlines, and rightly so. The loss has re-ignited the title race in Spain’s La Liga, with Atletico Madrid equaling Barcelona on points while Real Madrid being only one point behind the two. In cricket, the Indian Premier league’s match of Royal Challengers Bangalore against Delhi Daredevils was most trending. The match ended with Delhi Daredevils winning the match thanks to a ton scored by daredevil Quinton de Kock.

Finally, Apple’s latest launch, a slim Macbook has made it to our trending list as well. With a new Intel processor, four different colors to chose from, faster graphics, faster flash storage and longer battery life might indeed make this 12 inch laptop a favorite for many.

Thus despite the failure of Doha talks, the lack of violence in the trending headlines makes it a relatively acceptable week. Hopefully this transition continues and more inspiring news find their way to our list.
