It was no surprise that one of the topics that trended on Twitter throughout the week was Olympics 2016 which ended on August 21. For 16 days, social media was flooded with Olympic conversations. There was a lot of global conversations around Rio 2016, its players and brands. In the region, the conversation took the lead on Twitter with Saudi Arabia seeing around 2,457 conversations around the game. United Arab Emirates saw 1,471 with Egypt at 1,513.
It trended in Saudi Arabia with Kariman Abuljadayel, who made history as the first Saudi woman to compete in the Olympics 100 metres. She came seventh in her preliminary heat, meaning she was eliminated from the games, but her participation earned widespread praise on social media.
