What’s Trending: Mother’s Day, Lebanon Elections & Captain America

Welcome to another read of the week’s trending headlines. This week includes Mother’s day celebrations, Lebanon elections, Superhero movie and relegation battle in EPL.

The week started on a good note with International Mother’s day being celebrated on 8th May. Besides the normal acts of cards and gifts being given, the day was also celebrated with the aid of social media. People all over the world changed their profile pictures and posted videos on Facebook to demonstrate the love for their mothers. #Mothersday and #Familyfirst were also being shared on Twitter.

After this emotional start, the news went downhill for two different reasons. Firstly a hotel caught fire in Cairo, Egypt killing 3 people and injuring around 91 others. The fire had started in Hotel Andalusia in downtown Cairo then spread to three other buildings. The reason for this blaze that took six hours to extinguish was still unclear and investigations were underway. This news was followed by several suicide and car bombings in Baghdad. The blasts resulted in over 80 deaths making it one of deadliest attacks in the Iraqi capital this year.

Staying in the Middle-East region, this week also witnessed the start of municipal elections in Lebanon, a first in six years. These elections offer hope to the internal crisis situation in the country. Young voters took to social media encouraging one another to exercise their responsibility to vote. #Elections2016 was being tweeted on Twitter.

This week also saw people flooding to cinemas to watch the much-awaited Marvel movie Captain America: Civil War. And like most of the recent Marvel movies, everyone was not only content with what was on show but are also eagerly awaiting the next Marvel movie in line. #CaptainAmerica, #CivilWar was seen trending on Twitter.

Coming lastly to sports, this week for once did not have a large number of soccer games, but they surely had some very important ones. The La Liga title race has come down between Barcelona and Real Madrid, with Atletico Madrid losing their match on Sunday. In English Premier league, Sunderland beat Everton last night to not only save their status in the Premier League for the coming season, but also relegated arch rivals Newcastle to the English Championship.

This is all in this week’s trending list. Have a nice weekend.
